Our mission is to educate the African American community about health concerns disproportionately affecting Black men.  We work to promote healthier lifestyle choices including routine doctor visits, better eating habits and regular exercise.

A health disparity is  a gap in the quality of health and health care across racial, ethnic, sexual orientation and socioeconomic groups.  For example:  African Americans are 1.8 times more likely to have diabetes as non-hispanic whites.

The #BetheBetterMan campaign identifies these gaps and creates community awareness surrounding them.  This year we're focusing on four particuluar diseases that adversely affect male health in the African American community. (Enlarge the pictures for full descriptions)

What Health Disparities Really Mean

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer

Black men are 60% more likely than white men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, and are more than twice as likely to die from the disease. Black men are also diagnosed at a younger age (about 3 years younger on average) and are more likely to have "high grade" tumors - the kind of tumors that grow rapidly, spread to other parts of the body, and often cause death.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number 1 killer for ALL Americans but nearly 44% of African American men have some type of cardiovascular disease.

Diabetes

Diabetes

4.9 million, or 18.7 percent of ALL African Americans aged 20 years or older have diabetes.

Obesity

Obesity

In 2011, African Americans were 1.5 times as likely to be obese as Non- Hispanic Whites.
